Here's a tip for a problem I hear often... When I get bottles back or buy commercial bottles, I rinse them out with my sink jet washer, then soak them in a bucket of PBW, or PBW-like cleaner. Usually I'm lazy and I let it go over night, or even a few days. Then I rinse them out again with the jet washer and wash them off. This is a great way to get even nasty bottles clean and remove labels.
It seems if the soak is longer than an hour or so, a white film develops on the bottles. I imagine this has something to do with the water hardness. There's no easy way to get this film off. Rinsing doesn't do it, nor does scrubbing. To clear this up I soak the bottles in a bucket of Star-San. A simple rinse won't do it, it seems to work best if the bottles get soaked for a while. I usually do a couple hours or so, or just over night again. After that, I just hang them up on the bottle tree and they're ready to use.
Here's a pick -- the left two show the scale, the right is after a Star-San soak.
Hey that center bottle sort of looks like Darth Vader playing guitar... cool!
