"Basically, if it wasn’t technically flawed in the check box sense, I didn’t get much useful feedback."

Did you email the judge that didn't provide adequate feedback? You absolutely should. Judges should be fully filling out the score sheet. I usually run out of space.

Every score sheet should provide the judge's name, rank, BJCP number and email address. If it doesn't, contact the competition director. If it does, contact the judge and let them know. To get better judges require feedback. Give them a shout if they did a good job as well.

I preprint labels with my BJCP info and email address to place on all my scoresheets. I've yet to receive ANY feedback from my judging.

I emailed a judge once, and they seemed pretty defensive. I can't help feeling like I'm writing because I didn't win, but you're right, some judges may be oblivious the frustration. That's part of my whole grand plan, where I think feedback from a fellow judge might be better received.

All the time, however, I hear people say they welcome feedback, but never get anything. I put that on my labels as well. I would prefer if someone called me out if I slacked. And it think too it should be mentioned that you can't really argue with what a judge senses. If they picked up diacetyl, but you don't get it in your keg, it doesn't mean they necessarily made it up and were wrong. I'm just strictly talking some indication for the score. Whether I agree with it or not is an entirely different topic.

I was thinking of actually emailing the judge of every score sheet. Either to thank them for their comments or ask for clarification.

    Thanks for your comments though!

We've gotten similar feedback from homebrew competitions. We didn't do terrible, but we didn't do great, and there was no sense of what was lacking or how to improve.

Glad you've decided to become part of the solution. We haven't had time to take that step yet. =)
