    Recirculating Mash and Chill Pump
A look at using a pump for recirculating mash (HERMS/RIMS) and whirlpool chilling.

Great stuff, Mike. From experience, I know that the Jamil-style chiller doesn't work so well with whole hops (they will either restrict the flow or clog the intake so that the chilling isn't as effective as it should be), so I can appreciate your comments about the use of that set up with whole hops.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, if you're using whole hops, a false bottom is a pretty good idea, or even a paint strainer bag. I think too even with pellets, I used to have some problems with big hoppy beers. It's all about the flow with all the hops. Brew on.

Hey, I set up my HERMS and use the HLT/Heat Exchanger as the chiller as well. I never see anyone doing this, but am not sure why. At the end of mashing, I dump the hot water and fill with cold. at the end of the boil and whirlpool, i just set up my ETC at my chill temp and set it to COOL (RANCO ETC) Depending on what i feel like doing, i either add ice, or just let the HLT drain while adding new tap water to the top, keeping the temp down. Chills it quickly and no need to drop more copper in the beer or clean another item. Any thoughts on this?
